Gabriela Zacapa got the idea of running a 100
miler when she was a little girl. Her father, who was a trail
runner, told her the story of pioneer Gordy Ainsleigh, who was the first person to run a 100 miles. It was one of her
father's favorite bedtime stories.
At the time, Ainsleigh participated in the 24-hour Western States Trail Ride, which was a horse race. When his horse went lame prior to the race, Ainsleigh decided he would run the mountain trail from the Squaw Valley Ski Resort to Auburn, California, rather than look for another horse to ride. Ainsleigh completed the equestrian race by running in 23 hours and 42 minutes. This was the beginning of the modern sport of ultra-distance trail running. That was all the inspiration Gabriela would need.

Gabriela started running at the age of 14 and would continue until she, too, would run a 100 miler. She ran and completed the Rio Del Lago 100 miler in 2014 in a time of 28:14. It was her second attempt at a 100 mile race.
